This grant assists in bearing the extra financial burden of care-dependent children due to their mental or physical disability to grow them at par with other social challenges effectively.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Amount

The current SASSA Care dependency Grant of R2090 has been increased after an official announcement by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. This increase is effective from April 29, 2024. 

From April 29, 2024, the SASSA Care dependency Grant will be increased by R100, and you will receive R2190 straight in your preferred bank account.

The SASSA SRD 350 Grant amount is calculated on precise scales, and beneficiaries with higher private incomes are not considered eligible

SASSA Rules and Regulations

The Department of Social Affairs has strict rules and regulations regarding eligibility criteria. If your bank account balance is more than the maximum threshold defined by the DSA eligibility clauses, you may not be eligible to receive an SASSA Care Dependency Grant for your child in the following month.

Payment Methods for SASSA Care Dependency Grant

The SASSA Care dependency grant could be transferred through the following payment methods. The beneficiary might choose any of the methods as their preferred payment method

  • Cash at a specific pay point on a announced payday, like Shoprite, Boxers, USave.
  • Electronic deposit into your bank account like Capitec, Moya App, SASSA Card and Postbank (bank charges may apply)

Eligibility Criteria for SASSA Care Dependency Grant

To qualify for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant, the caregiver who is applying must meet the following criteria:

  • The guardian must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • They must be the direct or primary caregiver of a child with severe disabilities.
  • The child should be less than 18 years of age.
  • Medical physicians must diagnose the child and possess documentation about the disability.
  • The total and private income of the primary caretaker should fall within the threshold limits to meet the criteria published by the SASSA Rules and Regulations clauses.

If the Care dependency’s guardians meet this criterion, they are eligible to apply for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant to receive monthly financial assistance by Social Relief of Distress.

How to Apply for the Care Dependency Grant

  • Log into SASSA website https://services.sassa.gov.za/ 
  • Enter the child’s details and mental or physical disability details. 
  • Enter the Identity number of the South African primary caretaker/guardian of a child.
  • Submit file of medical reports approved by Registered Medical Practitioner with documentation of complete history of child’s disability.
  • Submit the completed online Care Dependency Grant SASSA application.

By-Hand Application

Request the SASSA Application form at your nearest SASSA Regional office.

Attach the required documents of:

  •  South African Identity Care
  • Child Birth Certificate
  • Medical report signed by Registered Medical Practitioner stating that child is mentally or physically unfit and needs special care and support
  • In the next 5-7 working days, the SASSA agent will visit the provided address to verify the address and process other validation protocols

SASSA agent will check if you provided correct residential address in SASSA records. Identification and confirmation of your income sources, our private income and bread and butter details of family would be taken

In the next 5-7 working days, the SASSA agent will visit the provided address to verify the address and process other validation protocols.

Notification for SASSA Beneficiaries

Remember, the SASSA Care Dependency Grant is highly sensitive to its verification and validation process and is offered to only the deserved quota of citizens. It may take about 30 working days from the date of the SASSA Appeal Application. You will receive a confirmation message through SMS by the SASSA Official number that your SASSA Status for Care Dependency Grant is approved. You can now check your payment dates for 2023, for instance.
